November 19, 2008Essential Electrician ServicesThere are definite markets for electrician services all over the United States. In fact they exist, with slight modifications in knowledge, all over the world. After US forces ousted Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq, the very next thing that was attempted in the country was the restoration of electrical power to the country. Almost nobody had running power after all the bombs fell on Baghdad and without electricity the entire country had come to a stop. Who performed the work? Trained electricians from all branches of the military were flown in and immediately started putting the pieces back together. In addition, entire electrical departments from independent contractors were sent over there to get things running again. Almost all of these jobs were initially established in Washington, D.C. and the surrounding areas. The area is famous for hiring electricians for military applications and any other area of expertise it deems sensitive in nature. If that’s your cup of tea, this is the area to come to first. Each major US city has a general need for common electrician services and a specific need due to some circumstance peculiar to the area. In Chicago, for instance, due to the high winds and frigid cold weather in the winter, electrical wiring has always been underground. Consequently, the city employs a huge force of electricians to maintain that wiring, that is the largest city employed electronic worker group in the country. Don’t be shockedSome electrical problems you might encounter are best left to a professional. If you need an electrician, consider these tips: August 15, 2008How to Do Home Electrical RepairsResidential wiring systems installed in older homes use a two-wire system in the 110-120-volt branch circuits. One conductor is hot, and the other is neutral. The neutral may also serve as a ground, but, unfortunately, it usually does not. When this is the case, the system is ungrounded and the situation is potentially hazardous. You can easily tell if your circuits are of this type by looking at receptacles. There are only two slots for each plug in ungrounded receptacles. Modern wiring calls for the installation of a third conductor. Receptacles used with this system have three openings: two vertical slots and a third, rounded hole centered below or above them. August 14, 2008Tip of the DayTip of the Day: A common difficulty for which people contact me is an outage on one circuit that is not due to a tripped breaker or GFI. This is from a poor connection Residential Services (an “open”) along the circuit. Most people don’t realize that there is a 50% chance that the bad spot is located at the last still-working item along the circuit. The other 50% of the time, it will be at the first non-working item. Knowing what the circuit consists of is another matter. August 13, 2008Turning an Electrical OutletTools: 1. Turn off power to the outlet at the breaker box. Use a voltage tester to make sure the power is off (figure A). 2. Remove the faceplate and the screws holding the outlet in the junction box with the slotted screwdriver. Gently turn the outlet until it is oriented properly. 3. Check all wires to make sure no copper wiring is exposed. If you can see a gap between the end of the insulation and the outlet (figure B), remove the wire with the miniature screwdriver and trim the exposed wiring using the wire cutters. 4. Insert the wire back into the outlet and tighten it so the insulation fits flush against the back of the outlet (figure C). 5. Replace the outlet and secure with screws. Replace the faceplate and turn the power back on. August 12, 2008How to Use a Multimeter (multitester)A multimeter is a device used in diagnosing electrical More Electricians problems. It can be used to test resistance and to measure voltage. Resistance can be safely tested with the power off. However, voltage can only be measured with the power on. Because of the risk of electric shock, an individual trained in the use of a voltage tester should only conduct voltage tests. The tests described below should be done when current is NOT present. Always unplug the device or turn off the main circuit breaker before attempting these tests. Always test your test equipment for proper operation before use. The common multimeter is a small handheld device with an indicator needle over a measurement scale or a numeric LCD display. The device has a switch to select the type of test to be performed. A multimeter also has two wires, one red (+) and one black (-), with metal tips. They are called probes. As some builders raced to deliver new residences when demand was strong, they sometimes cut corners to speed up construction. Now, the many companies under financial pressure may be even more hard-pressed to fulfill their commitments. In these times, “Buyers must be extra vigilant,” said Barry LePatner, a New York-based real estate attorney. June 21, 2008Ford introduces Work Solutions in-dash computer package for F-150Ford is not shy about reminding the world of the enormous number of full-size trucks that it sells every year. A large portion of those trucks get sold to people who use them to earn their living. Contractors, plumbers, electricians, installers, landscapers and more use their trucks and vans as mobile offices, workshops and tool cribs. With the market for this class of vehicles getting increasingly competitive, thanks to new models from Chrysler and entries from Toyota and to a lesser degree Nissan, Ford knows it needs to provide something that appeals to those core commercial customers. |
