But in the housing market’s delirious boom and current bust, unusual dangers lurk for buyers. As some builders raced to deliver new residences when demand was strong, they sometimes cut corners to speed up construction. Now, the many companies under financial pressure may be even more hard-pressed to fulfill their commitments. In these times, “Buyers must be extra vigilant,” said Barry LePatner, a New York-based real estate attorney.
