Union will ease OT rules for shows
The largest organized labor contingent at McCormick Place agreed to pare back its overtime opportunities under a new two-year contract, the latest in a series of union pacts aimed at cutting labor costs and hassles for trade show exhibitors. Negotiating directly with trade show contractors for the first time, the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters extended its straight-time window on weekdays by four hours, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The riggers and decorators agreed to similar pacts in 2006. And the carpenters agreed to shrink the double-overtime period on Saturdays. Now, the rate will be time-and-a-half for 12 hours on Saturdays, rather than the eight hours in the previous contract, with the period extended by two hours in the early morning and by two hours in the late afternoon.
